God, Games, & Geekery
“Building a community of geekery to strengthen faith within the body of Christ; where geeks can be who they were created to be.”
God, Games, and Geekery meets friends where they are. Since social media is such a huge part of their lives, we go where they are. We reach out to the video game community through live streaming on the gaming platform, Twitch (think ESPN but you can text chat with the commentators or players) providing three types of “Live Content.”
Tuesdays: Study Buddy
Many within our online community fall within the neurodivergent spectrum. For those struggling with this, we offer a stream that helps them get homework, studying, or a focus complete. One of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD is helped by “body doubling”; having another person around while working on a task. Through Study Buddy, we help those participants simply by being present with them online to assist them in starting, staying focused, and finishing their homework or project simply by being with them and occasionally checking in. Through our online format, we are able to offer this service to students all over the world.
Wednesdays: Faith & Film
Each week our ever-growing community chooses a geeky movie to watch before the next Wednesday. Each person watches the movie on their own and then joins in for a wider discussion on Wednesday’s Faith and Film segment where we openly chat about how the messages in the movie pertain to our personal journey.
Thursdays: Gaming With Friends
Gaming with Friends is connection day. Since our direct connection is gaming on the network of Twitch, we take this time to play with and for them. During this time we find we get to know our community. We chat with fans of the game we play, about the joy we have. and pray for them. This open format allows us to connect with atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Buddhists, and even those who have been hurt by the church. Through Gaming with Friends, we build relationships, opening up deeper and more personal conversations about faith.
